Joe Mahoney

2025 - 2026

Bio

Old-ish at 44 years old.  I am self-admittedly a somewhat atypical candidate for this fellowship.  Married for 18 years to my beautiful bride, Samantha.  2 sons:  Fionn and Ash.  3 boxers:  Lulu, Shadow, and Hobbes.  No cats:  cats are pointless.

I've had a desire to do a fellowship in wilderness medicine since medical school, which admittedly was some time ago.  I've always enjoyed camping, hiking, kayaking, rucking, running, and well, pretty much just being outside whenever I can.  I'm grateful to Dr. Mann and everyone involved for slecting me for this fellowship.

Most importantly, I am supremely thankful to my incredible family for unhesitatingly supporting me in this mid-career change. Their love and support mean everything.

Cody Stothers

2026 - 2027

Bio

My name is Cody and I’m excited to be heading back south to the Upstate for my wilderness medicine fellowship! I’m originally from Arkansas and hopped over to Tennessee for college where I studied philosophy and met my wife. I stuck around for medical school and graduate training in immunology. We’ve been in Ohio for the last 4 years while I completed residency in emergency medicine at the University of Cincinnati. I was fortunate to also serve as a flight physician and SWAT physician during my time in residency.

My interest in wilderness medicine originated out of a love for trail running and ultramarathons. I also enjoy climbing and backpacking. I’m a novice at downhill sports but am getting more confident on mountain bikes and skis. My goals in fellowship are to take my urban EMS and rescue experiences out to the backcountry through search-and-rescue operations and to gain some expertise in ultra-distance medical direction. I’m eager to take whatever else RAW MED has to offer.

I’m coming to The Upstate with my wife Caley and our two dogs, Cooper and Maisie. Unlike Joe, we also have a cat, Betty, who oversees the daily affairs of the Stothers household. We couldn’t be more stoked to come explore for the next year!
